PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

Once you have more gear than you can carry, you need somewhere to put it. DayZ storage ranges from a buried bag to a full tent, and the smartest survivors spread loot across several hidden containers rather than one big pile.

Storage options

  • Barrels — large capacity and weatherproof (rain ruins loose gear); can also serve as a fireplace/smoker.
  • Tents — car, medium and large tents hold a lot but are bulky and visible if not hidden well.
  • Sea chests, crates and drybags — smaller, portable and good for buried stashes.
  • Buried stash — use a shovel/pickaxe to bury a container underground; nearly invisible and great for backups.

Persistence and keeping it safe

Stored items have a persistence timer: if nobody interacts with a container for long enough it can despawn, so visit your stashes to keep them alive — owners set the exact lifetimes, so check your server's rules. Hide containers away from roads and loot runs, keep them out of the rain (or use barrels), and split your gear across several spots so one find is never a total loss. See base building and raiding.

Questions

How do I store loot safely in DayZ?

Use hidden, weatherproof storage — barrels or buried containers — away from roads and loot runs, and spread gear across several stashes so a single discovery does not cost you everything.

Will my stash disappear?

It can. Storage has a persistence timer and despawns if left untouched too long. Visit your stashes regularly, and check your server's item lifetime rules.
