PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

The stamina bar controls how long you can sprint, jump and climb. The heavier you are loaded, the lower your maximum stamina — so a greedy, over-packed survivor runs out of breath fast and cannot get away from danger.

What affects stamina

  • Carrying weight — every item has weight; the fuller your clothes, bag and hands, the less stamina you have.
  • Sprinting, jumping and vaulting all cost stamina; let it recover before a sprint you might need.
  • Being injured, cold or dehydrated reduces stamina and recovery.
  • Carrying a heavy item in your hands (like a jerry can or a log) slows you the most.

Travel light

Resist filling every slot. Carry what you need — water, food, meds, ammo that fits your gun — and stash the rest at a base or in a hidden container. A light survivor can sprint away from a fight and vault obstacles; an over-encumbered one gets caught.

Questions

Why can't I sprint in DayZ?

You are probably overloaded. Too much carrying weight lowers your maximum stamina until you cannot sprint at all. Drop or stash items to lighten up.

Does carrying weight slow you down?

Yes. More weight means less stamina, so you tire faster and move slower, especially with a heavy item held in your hands.
