A base gives you somewhere to store loot and respawn your supplies between lives. In vanilla DayZ building is deliberately slow and material-heavy, and a hidden base is far safer than a strong one — anything can eventually be raided, but a base nobody finds never gets touched.
Materials and tools
- Tools — a hatchet/axe for wood, a shovel/pickaxe for ground work, a hammer, and a screwdriver/pliers for some parts.
- Wood — chop trees for logs and planks; you need a lot.
- Nails — the perennial bottleneck; hoard them from houses and sheds.
- Metal & wire — sheet metal and barbed wire for stronger, harder-to-raid walls.
What to build
- Fence kit → wall — the basic building block; upgrade it with planks and sheet metal for strength.
- Gate — a fence you can open, secured with a combination lock.
- Watchtower — height for spotting threats and defending.
- Storage — barrels (also weatherproof your loot), tents, sea chests and crates. Bury stashes/underground for loot that survives even if the base falls.
Hide it
Pick a spot away from popular loot runs, roads and the coast. Tree cover, terrain and distance from hotspots are your best defence. A modest, well-hidden stash beats a fortress on a main road every time. On many servers, loot left in storage persists across restarts, but check the server's rules on base and item lifetimes so your stuff is not cleaned up.
