PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

A combination lock secures a gate or door with a code. It keeps honest people out, but a determined raider with the right tools and time can get through almost anything — so security in DayZ is really about making your base not worth the effort.

Locking up

Attach a combination lock to a gate and set your code; from then on it must be dialed to open. Set a code you will remember and never let anyone watch you dial it — people shoulder-surf codes. Some servers add or remove lock types and raid tools through their config, so what is possible varies by server.

How raiding works

  • Raiders use tools like a hacksaw on locks, or heavier methods the server allows to break walls and gates.
  • Raiding is loud and slow, which is a defence in itself — noise draws other players and the infected.
  • The best protection is a base that is hidden and unremarkable, so nobody starts the raid in the first place.
  • Spread loot across multiple small hidden stashes (including buried ones) so a single successful raid never gets everything.

Questions

I forgot my combination lock code — can I get in?

Not easily; you would have to raid your own lock as anyone else would. Always note your code down, and never dial it where another player can watch.

Can you stop a base being raided entirely?

No base is truly unraidable in vanilla. The real defence is staying hidden and splitting loot into multiple stashes so one raid is not a total loss.
