PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

Most of your fights are avoidable, and the best survivors pick which ones to take. When a fight is unavoidable, position, surprise and staying calm matter more than having the best gun.

The infected

  • They are drawn by noise — gunfire, sprinting, breaking into things. One is easy; a horde is deadly.
  • Fight them with melee or a quiet weapon to avoid pulling more. A gunshot in town can wake the whole street.
  • Use doors and corners to fight them one at a time instead of being surrounded.
  • They can open doors and will chase; break line of sight and distance to lose them.

Player vs player

  • See first, shoot first. Most PvP is decided by who spotted who. Use cover, tree lines and patience.
  • Watch for the third-person peek — on servers with 3rd person, players look around corners and over walls without exposing themselves. Many PvP servers run first-person only to stop this.
  • Do not silhouette yourself on ridgelines, roads or in doorways with light behind you.
  • Reposition after you fire; your muzzle flash, sound and tracer give away where you are.
  • If you are outgunned or low, breaking contact beats dying. Gear is replaceable; your current life and stash location are not.

Questions

What does KOS mean in DayZ?

"Kill on sight" — shooting any player you see without talking. Some servers allow it; others have rules against it. Check the server's rules and Discord.

How do I lose a horde of infected?

Stop making noise, break line of sight around buildings, and put distance between you. Lead them away, then slip off quietly rather than fighting them all.
