A working car turns a two-hour trek into a ten-minute drive and carries loot and teammates. But cars spawn as empty shells; you have to find the parts, fit them, add fluids and fuel, and then not kill yourself driving it — DayZ vehicles can be deadly when the server lags.
Parts to make it run
- Battery and spark plug — to start the engine.
- Radiator (on cars that use one) plus coolant/water so it does not overheat.
- 4 wheels — fit all of them; a missing wheel wrecks handling.
- Fuel — fill the tank from a jerry can or a working fuel station.
- Some vehicles also want engine oil and other fluids; check each wheel and fluid is in good condition, not ruined.
Drive without dying
- Drive at a sensible speed — DayZ physics are twitchy and desync can throw you off the road.
- Watch for rubber-banding near server restarts and in low-performance moments; slow right down.
- Avoid fences, steep hills and sharp turns at speed — a crash can injure or kill everyone inside.
- Carry spare parts and a jerry can for repairs and refuels on the road.
Storing a vehicle
Hide a parked car in trees away from roads, and consider removing a part (like the battery) so a passer-by cannot simply drive off with it. Vehicles can despawn on a persistence timer like base parts, so check your server's rules.
