DayZ has no global chat by design. Voice is proximity-based — anyone close enough hears you, and the closer they are the louder you are. That makes talking both your best tool for making friends and a way to give away that you are there.
How to communicate
- Voice chat — speak and nearby players hear you positionally. Keep your mic down when sneaking; the infected do not hear voice, but players do.
- Gestures / emotes — a radial menu of actions: wave, point, surrender (hands up), sit, and more. Useful when you have no mic or want to look non-threatening.
- Surrender — raising your hands shows you are not a threat; some players hold others up this way instead of shooting.
- Text chat — available on PC (and some servers), but most interaction is voice.
Meeting a stranger
First contact is the most dangerous moment in DayZ. Keep distance, keep cover, and talk early and calmly — "friendly!" from range beats a surprise approach. Watch their hands: a raised weapon is a warning. If it feels wrong, break contact rather than hope. See fighting players for when talk fails.
