Updated 12 October 2026

Where a new character appears is set in cfgplayerspawnpoints.xml in the mission folder. It lists the spawn positions and the rules the server uses to pick one, such as keeping away from infected and other players.

The three spawn types

  • fresh: new characters.
  • hop: players coming from another server.
  • travel: travel spawns.

The settings

  • Spawn checks: the distances a spawn point must keep, in metres: min and max to infected, to players and to objects.
  • Spawn grid: how spawn points are spread around each position: grid density, width and height in metres, and the min and max slope in degrees.
  • Groups: whether spawn groups are used, whether they count as regular points, the group lifetime (seconds before another group is used) and how many players spawn at a group before the next (-1 for no limit).

Move where players spawn

  1. Download cfgplayerspawnpoints.xml and keep a copy.
  2. In the fresh section, change or add positions in the area you want players to start.
  3. Check the file with the free DayZ File Checker, upload it and restart.

Pair it with a custom spawn loadout to control what fresh spawns carry as well as where they start.

Questions

Players spawn next to each other. Why?

Raise the minimum distance to players in the spawn checks, and make sure there are enough positions spread out.

Can I make everyone spawn in one town?

Yes: list only positions in that area under fresh. Keep the spawn checks, so players don't land on top of each other.

When do changes apply?

After a restart.
