PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

Your body temperature is a real stat in DayZ. Get too cold and you shiver, lose health and can pass out; the fastest route there is wet clothing. Rain, rivers and the sea soak your gear, and wet gear drains your warmth even on a mild day.

Staying warm and dry

  • Wear layered, warm clothing — jackets, a hat, gloves and boots. Some items insulate far better than others.
  • Avoid swimming unless you must; it soaks everything and chills you fast.
  • Shelter from rain under roofs and dense trees, and build or find a fireplace to warm up and dry out.
  • Standing by a fire dries your clothes and raises your temperature; it also makes light and smoke others can see.
  • Wring out or swap wet clothes when you can — a dry set in your bag is a lifesaver.

Cold maps

On Sakhal, the frozen Frostline map, cold is a constant threat, not an occasional one. Fires, warm gear and keeping dry go from useful to essential, and you plan routes around places to warm up.

Questions

How do I stop shivering in DayZ?

Shivering means you are too cold. Get out of the rain, change into dry clothes, stand by a fire and eat and drink — being well fed helps you hold heat.

Can you overheat in DayZ?

Yes. Sprinting in heavy warm gear or sitting too close to a fire can push your temperature too high, which also costs health. Balance it.
