PC, Xbox & PS Updated 2 November 2026

Wildlife is both a food supply and a danger. Grazing animals feed and clothe you; predators hunt in packs or one-on-one and can kill a geared survivor in seconds.

Animals you hunt

  • Deer, boar, cows, goats and sheep — lots of meat and fat; skin them with a knife for hide, bones and guts used in crafting.
  • Chickens and hens — small meals, and hens give feathers and bones.
  • Skinning — use a knife on a carcass to harvest, then cook the meat before eating.

Predators that hunt you

Wolves roam in packs and will circle and rush you; a loud, well-aimed weapon and keeping a wall at your back help. Bears (on maps that have them) are rare but brutal — a bear can kill you in a couple of hits, so avoid or shoot from range. Gunfire against predators is loud, so expect it to draw attention.

Questions

How do I hunt and cook animals in DayZ?

Kill the animal, use a knife on the carcass to skin it for meat and fat, then cook the meat over a fire until it reads cooked before eating.

Are wolves and bears dangerous in DayZ?

Very. Wolves attack in packs and bears can kill you in seconds. Deal with them from range, keep cover at your back, and avoid bears entirely if you can.
